When it comes to clutter, there can be many reasons why someone is fearful. They may be afraid if they let something go they may need it again or they won’t be able to replace it.

You see, although in some respects the clutter represents chaos and being out of control, it can also for some, be a source of comfort.  Comfort in a way where one’s things replace or substitute areas of one’s life where they may be experiencing a sense of lack.

It is understandable one may “think” this, especially when the reason they held onto their stuff for so long was because it helped them through some difficult times.  So hence, letting go, may trigger other emotions that can create a sense of loss.

Fear are stories we tell ourselves and there can be many layers of fear.  Underneath these layers is usually something we are terribly afraid of.

So how do we fight fear?  By facing it head on.

Here is where knowledge about one’s self becomes your best strategy to fight your fear.  Why?  Because it’s impossible to control something you know nothing about.  But you can control your outcome from what you understand.  Therefore, understanding what is driving your fear helps you not only confront what you are afraid of but helps you fight back and change it.

Let’s take a hypothetical situation and use this as a case in point.  Let’s say you have a house full of clutter.  Your desire is to be organized and orderly.  However, you have much fear when it comes to releasing your stuff.  Yet, you feel equally fearful that if you don’t do something about it, it will really get out of control.

One approach to overcoming your fear is to create a vision of what you would like to see happen for yourself.  An example would be, “I would like to have more open space in my home and have everything in its place.”  Then take a moment to visualize what that may actually look like in your home.

Next, ask yourself, “Why is this vision important to me?”  A simple answer may be, “I am tired of not being able to find my things and spending too much time looking for them.”

Another question from there may be, “How would this vision affect the quality of your life?” And an answer may be, “It would make my life more manageable, reduce stress and give me peace of mind.”

Now let’s look at this together.  You have a house full of clutter.  You want to be clutter-free.  You want to be clutter free because you understand that it will provide you with a better quality of life.  This much we know so far.  Yes?

Okay, now we get to the good part.  Facing the fear head on…

So let me ask you something, “If you want all these things that you say you do, what’s stopping you?”  And you may answer with something like this, “Well, I’ve tried many times before but I never succeeded.  And I guess in truth, I’m “afraid” that I may need my things one day if I get rid of them I won’t be able to get them back.”

Aha!  There it is.  The thought that you planted in your head that you will never be able to recover something is so ingrained, that it paralyzes you from moving forward with your vision.  And the truth of the matter is that the chances of you never really being able to  find, obtain or purchase those “things” again is pretty slim.  So it’s an un-truth you told yourself that you “bought” into.  Hence, causing you to feel terribly afraid.

So here it is.  The story of fear and underneath all those layers is an untruth.  In part, it’s been the story you may have been telling yourself all this time because in some way it was helping you cope with something that may have been causing you distress.  Therefore, “letting go” may symbolize for you a loss of not having something important in your life when times get tough.  “For, if not for your clutter, what would you cling to?”

It’s fascinating, isn’t it?

But the good news is that today, you know better.  By facing what you are truly afraid of you have the power to change it.  You know this is just an old story that keeps replaying, over and over.  All you have to ask yourself now is “How would your life be different if you were able to overcome this?”  Just imagine the possibilities for you!

BOOT CAMP REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN

What is Boot Camp?boot camp

A training program that can possibly change your life!

Why Boot Camp?
You see, it has been my experience that people who struggle with task management, procrastination, and clutter have “something” in common. That something is the lack of follow-through.

What I also found is that people sometimes equate the experience of following through with the word “discipline” which can conjure up negative feelings, possibly an experience of punishment or something of that nature.

Now this belief system can potentially limit them in this area until one comes from a place of understanding and acceptance, but I also found that sometimes, yes, sometimes, the best way to overcome the lack of follow-through is to just jump in with a “Boot Camp” attitude.

With your new “Boot Camp” attitude, you will no longer be saying things such as this:

  • “I can’t take it anymore”
  • “I can’t stand myself for being late”
  • “I’m so overwhelmed & frustrated”
  • “I’m so embarrassed I can’t have anyone over”
  • “I feel like a failure”
  • “I have too many things going on”
  • “I’m such a mess”

What can you expect from Boot Camp?

  • To be challenged.
  • To break self-defeating patterns.
  • To experience giving and receiving support.
  • To be part of a team.
  • To feel like a winner.

Now don’t worry, there will be no one dressed in army fatigues screaming at you, but there may be whistles, alarm clocks and a few obstacle courses… (lol)

Here’s how it works:

Step One

You will show up to a Group Conference Call with everyone who has enrolled in Boot Camp.  There will be a meet and greet and sharing of each person’s challenge and struggle. This will now be your Peer Support Group to access through your training.  Count on making new friends.

Date:  April 6, 2015

Step Two

You will send me pictures/video of your entire home and/or office environment.  I understand I will be entering your world and I take that invitation very seriously.  You can count on confidentiality, respect and no judgement.

Step Three

We will set up a private one hour conference call, otherwise known as an “Intake Session” to review your pictures.  This session allows me the opportunity to assess your living conditions and consult with you in a very private and personal way. This will be invaluable information for me to understand you better, i.e., patterns, behaviors, circumstances. This must be completed the week of April 6, 2015.

Step Four

You will be given a suggested plan of action which will take into consideration your ability to invest physically, emotionally and financially.  And I’ve added something new!  We will have our very own FACEBOOK BOOT CAMP PAGE for members only – you will receive the link to this upon registration!

Step Five

We will engage in a one-on-one weekly coaching program for 30 minutes for a period of 7 weeks.  That’s a total of seven (7) sessions.  They will be set each week on the same day and same time.  In these sessions we will:

  • Set your agenda for the devised plan
  • Create next steps
  • Have deliberate target dates
  • Have measurable outcomes

Step Six

We will develop a “Best Practice” for you to then utilize moving forward in your organizing pursuits and maintenance routine.  This is otherwise known as the “Continuation Process.”

Step Seven

You will attend two more Group Coaching Calls.  Halfway through and then at the closure.

Please Note:  Our time together is considered just like “Real Time.”  You have the option to engage via internet, telephone or Skype. This is a modality that I have used for many years to service clients nation wide and is just as effective as if I were there “live.”

What Can You Do In 15 Minutes?

Tasks You Can Do Each Day To Lessen The Load

What Can You Do In 15 Minutes?

What Can You Do In
15 Minutes?

Spring is the season for cleaning things up and getting organized.

Although we may have the desire to bring order to our lives, it can still be challenging to dedicate the time.  I’m sure if given a choice most of us would opt for play time instead.

It’s not unusual to feel conflicted between wanting to get all the chores done yet want to spend quality time with friends and family.

So what can we do to lighten the load and still have time to do the things we want?

Begin with utilizing one of the Golden Rules of Organizing; The 15-Minute Rule.

Each day choose a task for 15 minutes or so and begin chipping away a little at a time. Before you know it, you will soon have everything under wraps and have more time for fun and relaxation.

Speed Clean Your Bathroom

Choose what you can clean for that day in 15 minutes – toilet, sink, shower, bathtub, tile, or floor.  A little at a time goes a long way to get the entire bathroom shiny and sparkling.

Vacuum Your Floors

Carpet, hardwood or tile – it all needs to be vacuumed.  Pick a room and clean away.  If you have time to spare – try damp mopping the floors to make it extra clean.

 Empty All The Trash

Go from room to room and empty the trash.  Then take it to your outside disposal or dumpster and be rid of it! Put a fresh liner in the baskets.

Clean Out The Refrigerator

Get rid of your leftovers, wipe down the shelves, and prepare your grocery list. Now you can go food shopping and put away your food in a clean refrigerator.  Nice!

Throw Out Expired Medicines

This is a good habit to get into – take inventory of your meds and get rid of all the expired ones.  Include non-prescriptions, vitamins, first-aid items, and cosmetics.  Just remember to be responsible when throwing away.

Organize Your Pantries

Take out what doesn’t belong there and put “like with like.”  Categorize all your soups, pastas, can goods, etc.  Have the labels face forward for easy viewing. Before you know it, the whole kitchen will be finished!

Clean Out Your Drawers

Today it’s your kitchen drawer, tomorrow it may be a desk drawer.  The point is, a little at a time and eventually you will work your way up to getting all the drawers done. That will feel good!

Program Your Cell Phone

Go ahead – finally make the changes necessary to your phone – change the ring tone, add or edit your contact list, download your pictures – just do it!

Recycle Old Books and Magazines

Do you have books and magazines that are just sitting there unread?  For every new book or subscription you bring in, the old must go out.  Recycle, Donate or Trash – take the time to view what you have and then take an action!
