In Chapter 9, we met Lily, whose seemingly spotless home concealed a deeper emotional struggle.
Today, we turn to Fiona, whose living situation carried an entirely different weight—one rooted in unresolved grief and a longstanding inability to let go.
Fiona’s Story
Fiona reached out numerous times about her apartment, which she had inherited from her parents. Though clutter was everywhere, the real barriers ran much deeper. Memories and mementos were tightly bound to her sense of loss, making it nearly impossible for her to part with anything. Each time she considered decluttering, waves of distress would keep her from taking the next step. Ultimately, Fiona’s repeated calls but lack of follow-through painted a poignant picture of how mental health struggles and trauma can foster a cycle of hoarding and inaction.

Deep grief can turn objects into emotional life rafts that feel impossible to release. - Hoarding Is Complex
What looks like “just clutter” often stems from profound trauma, requiring patience and specialized support. - Reaching Out Is Only the First Step
