Opportunity Knocks!

Consultation & Assessment

On-Site:
I will personally come to your home and provide you with a consultation and assessment of your physical environment and clutter condition. This process generally takes from 2 to 2.5 hours. Think of it as an Intake Session that has a series of questions and exercises for you to participate in. A suggested action plan will then be provided with a step-by-step outline. I will also take into account the investment of time, resources and finances it will require to complete the proposed plan for a successful transformation.

Virtual:
You will receive the same quality of care as the On-Site Assessment & Consultation except it is done via telephone or Skype. Prior to our time virtually, you will send me pictures of your environment through email or text. We will then spend 2 hours together virtually just as if I was there in person conducting the Intake Session. A suggested course of action will follow taking into consideration your overall investment of time, resources and finances that will be necessary for the proposed transformation.

*Please note that your overall physical and emotional well-being is always a factor when considering your action plan.

On-Site Half-Day Sessions
These sessions are available when it’s necessary to assist you hands-on. This can involve purging, sorting and organizing. These sessions are designed to support you through the process of decision making and provide organizational training – they do not include labor. All sessions must have the consultation and assessment performed before booking. Each session is 3 hours long and can be purchased in blocks of time from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm or 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

On-Site Full-Day Sessions
These sessions are available for 5 hours from the hours of 10:00 am – 3:30 pm with a half-hour lunch break unless other arrangements are recommended. Time purging, sorting, organizing to de-clutter your environment for a full day is considered a more aggressive approach and requires a deeper commitment than half-day sessions. Arrangements for off-site hauling and labor are usually considered and discussed prior in the consultation and assessment that is mandatory before booking.

Virtual Organizing Sessions
In the comfort of your own home you will receive guidance and training virtually through the telephone or Skype. This can be done in blocks of time that are broken down into process segments or if you choose they can be done throughout the entire session. These sessions are available from 1 to 3 hour segments which can be applied towards getting your environment in order. This is a great alternative to on-site organizing as it provides you with a pro-active approach to achieving your goals with support.

Are You Accountable For Your Clutter?

Are You Accountable For Your Clutter?

One morning I was in the office before usual business hours getting ready for my day ahead, when my telephone rang.  Detecting a sense of worry from the caller, I listened to her until her anxiety subsided.

I then asked her a question, which I believe became the turning point for her, which was;

“What part of the clutter are you willing to take ownership of ?”

Are You Accountable For Your Clutter?

It is not uncommon when someone is faced with insurmountable amounts of clutter to place blame on everyone or anything, as long as it isn’t them.  The reason being, I believe, is it can be very painful to accept (until we are ready) that we could be the source of own downfall.

From my experience, I have witnessed countless times, clients who try to maintain control over their clutter, failing to recognize that they are powerless over something that is virtually bigger than them.  Until their level of denial is penetrated, excuses will continue. It is when a person can accept the reality of what their clutter is about; a by-product or symptom of something else, the clutter will then cease.

There have been critical times, right before work will commence or a contract needs to be signed, that a person will reject or find fault with something in order to stay still in there mess.  The manifestation of their clutter is far more comforting then the prospect of clearing out the chaos.

This is the time that understanding and patience is required.  It is not always easy, if I do say so myself, especially when hours of time have been invested before hand, but never the less, it is in the client’s best interest not to pursue action, since it will only lead to unsuccessful attempts.

One of the ways to break this cycle is to participate in support groups, sign up for workshops and engage in coaching programs that have an emphasis on clutter education.  This way, a foundation has been set and groundwork is complete before entering into a formal commitment of the de-cluttering process.

As I have always maintained, baby steps are the way to changing behavioral patterns.  It is also important to recognize that celebrating your victories, no matter how small, is key for success.

In the end, the person who can maintain accountability for their actions will triumph over the clutter.

Tuesday’s Tips Tel-Class – June 7th – One Man’s Treasure…

It can be so confusing and overwhelming my clients tell me.  All these thoughts circle around their head such as:

  • What should I keep?
  • What do I get rid of?
  • What things are of monetary value?
  • What if I need it someday?
  • What do I do with the stuff I inherited?
  • And on it goes…

There is no doubt about it – your “treasures” tell a story and you want to be sure that you are making the right decision when it comes to keeping or letting go.  This is understandable.

However, it has been my experience that all of this “thinking” ahead of time can create a lot of anxiety and worry – which sometimes can end up paralyzing you.

So the answer here is to get some of the facts on:

  • What to do
  • How to do it
  • When to do it

Everyone’s treasures are different and unique – but the process of “letting go” generally falls around this theme:

  • I am ready to move on with my life
  • I am ready to release the things that used to hold me back

Which simply means, you no longer wish to live in the past amongst the things that you were clinging on to.

You realize you can still hold onto the memories of what the things represent and make room for new memories to come.

And most importantly – you will let go without fear or worry and feel good about your decisions –

Now that is what constitutes …

“One Man’s Treasure From One Man’s Stuff”

So ask yourself now –

  • Are you ready to take action?
  • Are you ready to dig deep and let go?

Then come on – sign up for Tuesday’s class – let’s roll up our sleeves and get down to it, shall we?

Living Simply

De-clutter your life—and your head.

written by Susan Brierly

Are there days when you can’t find your keys? Do you own a closetful of clothes but never seem to have anything to wear? Do you spend sleepless nights wondering how you will ever plan the kids’ birthday parties, organize the basement, or balance your checkbook (since you haven’t reconciled it in six months)? If you constantly seem to be playing catch-up, you’re not alone.

“The first step is to establish a more organized lifestyle that suits your personality—it’s not about living in a sterile environment. It’s a conscious choice that’s conducive to how you interact with your family, and how you want to be perceived,” says Patricia Diesel, principal owner and president of Keep It Simple Now, a New Jersey-based professional organizing company. Diesel, a Basking Ridge resident, is a certified empowerment coach and national speaker who assists individuals, entrepreneurs, and corporations that need help with chronic disorganization and life balance.

“Functioning in an organized manner actually frees you to enjoy a simpler and more carefree life,” she says. Some of Diesel’s clients just need a little help managing the disparate elements of their lives. Others are chronically disorganized, and need to establish smart habits and structure to keep them on track. Still others are hardcore hoarders who need to take a serious look at their habits to understand the emotions (such as anger and fear) that often drive their behavior.

How do you know when you’ve crossed the line?

Here is Diesel’s reality check list:
✻ Is your personal or business life in jeopardy because of your disorganization?
✻ Are piles and piles of papers or magazines becoming part of your décor?
✻ Do you continually lose items such as car keys and important documents?
✻ Is it difficult to let go of things that you no longer need?
✻ Is procrastination becoming part of your routine?
✻ Is your chronic disorganization causing you or your business to lose time and money?

“Becoming organized is a gradual process. It can be intimidating, so I don’t pressure my clients,” Diesel says. “It’s okay to take baby steps by spending as little as fifteen minutes a day to begin to de-clutter one’s life.”

Diesel’s basic tips for a more organized life include:
✻ Purge first, then sort.
✻ Assign everything a  home.
✻ Organize similar items together.
✻ Dedicate 15-20 minutes each day to creating order.
✻ Break projects into manageable baby steps.
✻ Celebrate your victories to keep motivated.

5 Questions to Ask Yourself About Clearing Your Clutter

So often I hear clients say they would do just about anything to stop the harassing effects of their clutter.

After countless attempts trying to purge and being defeated, some people associate their lost battles with a feeling of being assaulted. All they know at this point is they want the chaos of the clutter to stop.

Introducing a list of questions at this point helps put things into perspective about not only their current circumstances but also about how the clutter came to be and what is needed to make it go away.

It’s more appealing to look at de-cluttering as a fun and enlightening concept rather than another grueling task. The goal is to de-clutter in a fashion that feels comfortable and natural.

If your clutter is having an emotional impact on you, begin by asking yourself the following questions. Allow yourself the luxury of taking the necessary time to answer completely and honestly, you may be surprised what your answers reveal.

What has prevented me from de-cluttering in the past?

  • Time
  • Motivation
  • Energy
  • A plan
  • Commitment
  • Distractions
  • Other

What do I find is the hardest thing about de-cluttering?

  • I don’t trust myself
  • Insecure with my decisions
  • I double-check myself
  • I remember what I like
  • Fear of letting go
  • Afraid I can’t get it back
  • I may need it
  • Don’t want to deal with it
  • Other

What would make it easier for me to de-clutter?

  • To know it’s OK to let it go
  • The idea that I can find it again
  • Someone to help me
  • A reward system
  • A plan I can follow
  • Thoughts of being clutter free
  • Other

How much time am I willing to commit to de-cluttering?

  • One day
  • One week
  • One month
  • Six months
  • One year
  • However long it takes
  • Other

What does de-cluttering represent to me?

  • Freedom
  • Simplicity
  • Excitement
  • Work
  • Exhaustion
  • Confusion
  • Other

After reviewing the answers to the questions above, you can easily begin to see what you need to put into action in order to begin taking action toward living an organized life. The easiest way to begin making organization part of your routine is to begin incorporating changes slowly. Create small wins for yourself so you can easily feel a sense of accomplishment and treat yourself to celebrate your win. This will begin creating a positive behavior pattern. In time, organization will become a part of your life, not something that overwhelms you.
