Feeling Overwhelmed? Try This.

We all feel overwhelmed at times.  And overwhelm is no stranger to lack of follow through.

Don’t beat yourself up and don’t put so much pressure on yourself if you are having difficulty right now completing something.

The mind on overwhelm is complicated.  It’s going to signal you to feel an array of emotions which can leave you feeling anywhere from anxious to exhausted.

But there are things you can do to control the chaos and be productive again.

Here’s how:

First, you need to capture it.Take the ‘overwhelm’ out of your head and put it on paper, where you can distance yourself from it a bit.  Just brain dump everything that is gnawing at you that you would like to get done.

Then I want you to sort it all out.  We refer to this as “Chunking.”  Think of it as categorizing your tasks and to-dos with headings and then sub-headings (keeping like with like).

Here’s an example:

MY LIST

ERRANDS (Category)                                         CALLS (Category)
Post Office (Sub)                                                  Make Eye Dr. Appt. (Sub)
Dry Cleaners (Sub)                                              Dinner Reservations (Sub)
Bank (Sub)                                                             Home repair estimates (Sub)

Next, choose the category that you want to take care of immediately.  Don’t overthink it.

And finally, take Action.  Either do it immediately, schedule it into your calendar, delegate the task, but take action right there and then.

By doing this simple exercise your mind will reward you by feeling uplifted and more positive.

Remember, break things down as much as possible whenever you feel it’s getting too big for your mind to handle.  It’s how you find simplicity in the complicated.

Motives Do Matter

Motives Do Matter

Emotions are a habit – You get what you tolerate.

Tony Robbins said this and he was right.  The key to unlocking your negative emotions is to realize that they have become just that – a habit.  It is a learned behavior.  What we need to do now is retrain ourselves to feel differently so we can begin to focus on the positive aspects of life – and begin to feel the passion again.  This is possible as our brain is like a muscle – it gets stronger with practice.

So how do we do this?

According to Tony, and most professional growth leaders, you begin by finding something greater than yourself to serve.  Live for your family, community, humanity.  Choose something that you  can aspire to and truly feel good about.  Remember you can’t fake this, so no BS here.  As they say, “Motives Do Matter.”

Life is too short to stay in this cycle.  This is not to say that you won’t ever  feel sad, mad, stressed out, etc., –  of course you will.  The difference is that you will not live there for very long.  You can change it.

Holiday Tips to De-Stress

Looking for tips to help you de-stress during the holidays?

Holiday De-Stress Tips

Here are some ideas to help you along your way:

  • Nurture Yourself: Set aside relaxation time – (yes, I am serious – make the time to relax – take a bubble bath, light scented candles, curl up to a good book.)
  • Spend time with positive people who enhance your life – (during the holidays we may have to be around people who cause us stress – so connecting with people you really like at this time is important.)
  • Do something you enjoy every day – (this will help balance you out and lift your spirits – go for a walk, play with your pet, meditate.)
  • Keep your sense of humor – (now come on, you know laughter is the best medicine of all – watch a good comedy, call a friend who always makes you laugh –  remember to just keep smiling)

And remember, try not to get too caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays – they are meant to be enjoyed!

Happy Holidays!

Baggage Draggers – Are You One Of Them?

It’s not unusual to find beneath the manifestation of clutter there is the presence of emotional baggage from life experiences.  Years of  pain packed in suitcases that are dragged around with a collection of burdens and life disappointments.

Sometimes we hold onto our baggage for extended periods of time until we decide to unpack it for a while just to make sure that it’s still all there – reliving all the hurt and pain.  Then when it gets too unbearable, we pack it all up and drag it somewhere else.

Holding onto past experiences doesn’t foster growth or allow for new opportunities to enter our lives that can bring  joy, peace or love for that matter.  Unfortunately when we cling to these memories, we invite the pain to stay even longer along with the bitterness, depression and discouragement.

In order to break free from our excess baggage we need to learn how to “let go” of it.  By making a decision that you  no longer wish to be held a captive prisoner of your past, you can tell yourself you finally have had enough of focusing on all the negatives and you want to concentrate on moving forward with your life.  It is then, new beginnings are possible and your life will begin to improve.

Cleaning up the physical clutter is an important aspect to functioning in a healthy environment, but it is only part of the process of living clutter free.  Today, decide to unpack your baggage, take a good look at it and then let it go!
